This week I was invited to talk at a Book club. It was a delightful evening with a group of seven lovely friends who have been meeting and discussing books for eleven years. I felt really honoured that they not only had all read my book but asked me along to talk about it.
I did a synopsis as a reminder of the plot and talked about why I wrote the book, the process of writing and answered questions about characters. I got some lovely feedback saying they had all enjoyed reading A Suitable Heir.
I learnt a lot and will do some research into what makes a good author presentation so I can improve next time. I will do another blog with that information later.
One of the things I spoke about was my history of writing and as I’m a bit of a hoarder I managed to dig out a folder of previously submitted writing and discovered some competition entries that were published in the 1990’s. There were professional articles I had published in magazines and newsletters, several submissions of short stories and poetry which didn’t get anywhere, two short stories published in writer’s group anthologies and one commended entry in the Holiday Fantasia Literary Awards. In addition, I entered the Woman’s Day-Mills and Boon Short story and was a runner up receiving a bottle of perfume as a prize.
I was also one of six runners-up in a Weight Watchers Magazine short story competition and my story Butterflies was published in Oct/Nov edition 1992. I even got paid $100 dollars. It was lovely to uncover that win but I think I forgot about it as life and studying took over. So always keeps a record of your submitted works. They provided me with great memories and some history of my writing career I can use in presentations.
Cheers Elsie

The Butterfly picture is an example of a Zen Tangle – a form of pen and ink that is an easy and quick illustration technique. I am a beginner but find it’s a very relaxing pastime. I hope you enjoy my presentation of Butterflies. L.C. Wong©2024
